One of the biggest challenges in IT is determining when to stop investing in old technology and to begin to transition to a new platform. The sad reality is that all IT investments come with expiration dates. Failing to recognize that fact and to plan accordingly is what can get an organization in trouble.
First, the IT organization must develop a comprehensive list of services provided. Next a determination must be made for each service on whether to retain, replace, renew, or retire the offering. ITIL provides solid guidelines for making this determination.
