Mobile apps will require IT organizations to think differently and to act differently. As quickly became clear in earlier technology shifts, once clients get comfortable with the new technology, there will be little patience to wait for IT policies, guidelines and standards.
Fortunately, we can learn from the past, and take proactive steps to understand how to bet leverage the new capabilities that mobile computing will present. Some things to consider:
- Engage technology leads in both the IT and business organization to explore new capabilities
- Find conferences or networking opportunities to get out and hear what others are doing
- Look for potential low risk projects with the focus on learning, not necessarily perfecting
Technology changes always create dangers and opportunities. By being curious, by being willing to adapt, we create the environment that leads to success.
